Azusa Schedules Vulcan Discussion Item for May 3rd; Staff Requesting Additional Direction
The just-posted Azusa City Council agenda for May 3rd reveals an agenda item under Section C. “Scheduled Items” regarding the Vulcan Materials Company’s application to modify its conditional use permit, development agreement, reclamation plan and environmental impact report.
The recommended action is for the City Council “to further review” the matter and “provide direction to staff.” It is not anticipated that the Council would vote on any of the items since the Brown Act requires each action item be individually listed on the agenda.
“I think it is very possible that the City staff wants to address the challenges with the current EIR in an open forum and I applaud them for that,” commented City Manager Darrell George. Some of the issues Duarte has raised include public noticing problems, geologocial issues and air quality problems.
Vulcan is requesting a revised Conditional Use Permit that will allow the company to expand its mining operations from a currently approved and partially mined site on the east side of its 270-acre property to a pristine 80-acre mountain ridge abutting hundreds of Duarte homes and schools.
In 2008, the Duarte City Council established a $700,000 “Fight Against Vulcan Expansion” fund (FAVE) in response to the anticipated expansion plans by Vulcan and its potential adverse impact on Duarte residents.
Videotaped coverage of the AQMD Town Hall, and Planning Commission meetings and recent Congressmember Judy Chu press conference can be viewed on Duarte Public Access (DCTV), Charter Cable Channel 3 in Duarte, and on DCTV on the Web, www.dctvduarte.com.
