Los Angeles County Probation Department
The Los Angeles County Probation Department in conjunction with The Duarte Unified School District and The Duarte Public Safety Department, provide intensive personal services to both at-risk youth and families in the City of Duarte. It is the mission of the Deputy Probation officers to insure that the probationers are attending school, and following all conditions of their probation. This may include but is not limited to drug testing, drug education, parent education, and community service.

Deputy Probation Officer Paul Villegas at the Duarte Public Safety (Prevention Services/Suppression Services) works with children and families from Kindergarten to High School. Specialized services are provided to children and teenagers that are having severe academic and behavioral problems in school. This referral process is in conjunction with the school outreach consultants throughout Duarte Unified.

In addition, this officer services Duarte High School and referrers probationers to both Boy’s Republic Day Treatment, and Eggleston Youth Center.  School Crime Suppression Program, consists of monitoring probationers that require intensive supervision. Provides probationers with opportunities to succeed in a school environment. Services include in person probationer contacts, school attendance monitoring, juvenile and parental referral services, and probation violation monitoring and reporting.

Additional programs include Boys Repubic Day Treatment, Foothill Family Services who provides counseling and educational services. “Youthworks” Community Service component, and positive rewards sponsored by Duarte Parks and Recreation, The Duarte Teen Center, and Duarte Public Safety Department. 

Youthworks
Youthworks is juvenile community service program that assists Duarte youth that are required to complete court ordered community service. Additionally, this program is used by Duarte Unified School District and the District Attorney’s office to expose children to a structured work environment, while gaining self-esteem and experience as they work throughout the city in community based organizations. The goal of Youthworks is to provide a structured “work-like environment” Successful graduates are hired by the City of Duarte to participate in the Recycling Program and Trail Crew Program.

The Recycling Program is city beautification. Youth assist City employees in a collection effort of Recycling material. This effort keeps the City of Duarte clean while contributing to the state’s recycling program and helping youth learn the importance of Recycling.

The Trail Crew selects youth to work with City employees in our local parks and trails in Duarte. The program focuses on the upkeep and maintenance of the Fish Canyon Trail. This team works Winter and Spring. Youth are physically challenged on the trails and hills of the Los Angeles National Forest. Youth from this program participate in “Wilderness Day”, help to educate the community on the many benefits of recycling.

R.O.P. Law Enforcement
This is an educational component and is part of The Duarte Unified ROP program. This class is taught at Duarte High School by Deputy Rob MacLean (School Resource Deputy, Los Angeles County Sheriff Department). Its purpose is to assist high school youth explore the field of Public Safety and Law Enforcement. Through this class, students gain an increased awareness and perspective of the procedures and opportunities in law enforcement while earning school credits. Students are exposed to the criminal justice system.

Meet the Deputies that Keep Duarte Schools Safe:

School Resource Officer, Deputy Robert MacLean has been working as Duarte’s School Resource Deputy for three years. Prior to this assignment, he patrolled the City of Duarte for five and one half years. His current assignment consists of pro-actively working with Duarte schools to provide crime prevention, intervention and suppression services. In addition to working with the schools, Dep. MacLean is a certified ROP teacher at Duarte High School, where he teaches Introduction to Law Enforcement. He is also Duarte’s graffiti expert and serves as an advisor the youth group mentoring program Duarte Area Resource Team, D.A.R.T.

Deputy Probation Officer Paul Villegas has been working with Duarte’s youth and their families for the past two years. Villegas works in a preventive capacity directly with at-risk elementary, middle and high school age students. He counsels minors who are having academic, attendance, and behavioral problems. As part of his role as the liaison to the Juvenile Court System in Duarte, he mentors elementary age students who participate in the boys club during the school year. He also serves as an advisor to the youth group mentoring program, Cardinals Helping Youth Live Life, C.H.Y.L.L.

These deputies partner and hold educational presentations for parents and youth on topics ranging from gangs and drugs to dealing with incorrigible youth. They also conduct home visits and are part of the Duarte Unified School Safety Team.

D.A.R.T. – Duarte Area Resource Team
The purpose of D.A.R.T. is to help young men and women explore public service careers. Through this exploration, they gain valuable experience, knowledge and training that can help them better reach their targeted goals and career. Activities also serve to enhance resumes, job applications and provide personal growth.

D.A.R.T. meets at 5 p.m. on the last Thursday of the month in the Duarte Teen Center. The program is open to young men and women from Duarte between the ages of 14 and 19 years of age, that must have at least a "C" average (if in school), be of good moral character without any serious arrest record and committed to make a positive impact in the community. C.H.Y.L.L.-Cardinals Helping Youth Live Life

CHYLL is a program for Duarte youth that will help develop job and leadership skills. Youth will engage in community service and recreational activities under the supervision of a City of Duarte Public Safety Department employee and a Deputy Probation Officer.

Youth will engage in two activities a month: one community service activity, and one recreational activity. At these activities youth will be mentored by High School age youth who serve as officers in the D.A.R.T., (Duarte Area Resource Team).  The High School volunteers will mentor CHYLL members and help them become the future leaders of the CHYLL program. With time the CHYLL program will mirror the eight-year old High School club D.A.R.T., Duarte Area Resource Team. As a result of their involvement in DART, the youth demonstrate better academic performance and grow to model good citizenship in our community. 

CHYLL is open exclusively to Duarte youth in the 7th and 8th grade or youth between the ages of 10 and 14 years of age. Youth must have at least a "C" average and be committed to make a positive impact in our community. Interested youth must submit applications to the Duarte Public Safety Office or to Outreach Consultant Todd Turner at Northview Intermediate School.
