City of Duarte Files Lawsuit Against Azusa and
Vulcan to Overturn Certification of Mining Expansion Project Environmental
Impact Report
-Lawsuit Also Charges Azusa City Council with Brown Act Violations in
Approving the Vulcan Project
The City of Duarte filed a lawsuit today that seeks to overturn the City of
Azusa’s certification of the Final Environment Impact Report and other
approvals that pave the way for Vulcan Materials Company to expand its
mining project to Duarte’s border.

9th Anniversary of 9-11
A tree dedication and memorial flower ceremony
remembering September 11th “Honor Among Ashes – A Memorial Tribute to the
victims of 9/11,” will be held Thursday, Sept. 9 at 8:00 a.m. in the City of
Duarte on the grounds of Royal Oaks Elementary School located at 2499 Royal
Oaks Drive in Duarte.

Duarte’s Huntington Drive Street Pavement
Project to Begin on July 19
Duarte’s Huntington Drive is in
line for a major overhaul this summer. Repaving of the full length of the
City’s main east-west corridor will begin on July 19 and is scheduled to be
completed at the end of August.

September 14th City Council Workshop on Draft Development Code and Zoning
Map
The final draft Development Code and Zoning Map, which are now available for
public review, will be reviewed at an upcoming City Council Workshop on
September 14, 2010. The City has completed a draft of the new Development Code,
which replaces the current Zoning Code, originally adopted in 1962 and last
updated in 1991. The accompanying draft Zoning Map reflects land uses and
vision established by the 2007 General Plan. Duarte citizens are invited to
review the draft code and zoning map and share their comments.

Duarte High School to Host Ninth Annual
Foothill Cities College Fair
The ninth annual Foothill Cities College Fair will take place on Tuesday,
September 21, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Duarte High School Quad,
1565 E. Central Ave. Admission is free.Students and their parents can compare
the programs and opportunities offered by more than 30 colleges and
universities from throughout California and the United States. Some of the
colleges will offer on-site registration opportunities.

Duarte Accepting Applications to Fill Opening On Parks and Recreation
Commission
The City of Duarte is accepting applications to fill one (1) position
on its Parks and Recreation commission. The term expiration is Dec. 31, 2011.

Route 66 Parade, City Picnic,
Classic Car Show, Arts & Crafts Show Set for Sept. 18
Duarte’s 15th annual Salute to Route 66 Parade will be a
celebration of youth with 14 year-old mountain climbing adventurer Jordan
Romero leading the way as the parade’s grand marshal.
This year’s parade will step off at 10 a.m. at the northeast corner of
Huntington Dr. and Cotter St. and proceed east one mile along Duarte’s historic
Route 66.

Duarte to Link to Azusa Pacific University
City Links Project
Teams of Azusa Pacific University students will partner with the City of Duarte
and Duarte nonprofits in volunteering a day of their time in community service
projects as part of APU’s City Links Project.
City Links provides an opportunity for APU first-year students and surrounding
community members to serve alongside one another to make an impact in their
community.

Father
Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention
agency in the country, and author of “Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of
Boundless Compassion” will be a featured speaker at the 8th annual Duarte
Festival of Authors on Oct. 2.

New Playground Equipment Unveiled at Andres Duarte Satellite Park
Kids
didn’t waste any time waiting on formalities before trying out the colorful
and exciting new playground equipment installed last week at Andres Duarte
Park. As parents and City of Duarte officials lined up for the official
ribbon cutting, children had to be coaxed away from the fun of the rock
climbing wall, slides and swings to join in the ceremony.

Duarte Community Clean-up Day and Household
Hazardous Waste Round-Up Set for October 16th
In the spirit of keeping Duarte beautiful, the City of Duarte is
inviting all residents to roll up their sleeves and participate on Saturday,
October 16 in the bi-annual “Duarte Community Clean-up Day “ and a County
sponsored household hazardous & E-waste roundup.

Edison to Finish Electrical System Upgrade in
Parts of Duarte
Southern California Edison will soon be completing a contract with the
Arizona Pipeline Company on work that started in April of 2010 to upgrade
the electrical system on Royal Oaks Drive and in the Fish Canyon areas of
the City of Duarte.
