Your Time - Their Future
Can a caring adult’s time really make a difference in the life of a young person? Recent research demonstrates that the involvement of a reliable adult helps youth develop life skills, build self-confidence, combat drug use and teen pregnancy. In one study young people who were being mentored, compared to other children, were:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • more confident of their performance in school
  • less likely to hit someone
  • less likely to become a teen parent

What is a Mentor?
A mentor is a responsible adult who provides a child with support, advice, friendship, reinforcement, and a constructive example to support the efforts of parents. Mentors are people who want to help young people bring out the strengths they already have.

What is a Mentee?
A mentee is a young person 7-17 years of age who may lack a caring adult role model or whose parents may need another adult to help steer the mentee in a positive direction. Mentees are sometimes limited in their world view and limited in their experiences outside of their culture and city. They may have low self esteem and sometimes lack self-confidence. Mentees are involved in the program voluntarily and have been given signed parental permission to participate. In some cases, mentees are referrals from the probation department. In other cases, mentees are referred to the program by parents, school counselors and various other entities.
