Duarte High School to Host Eighth Annual Foothill Cities College Fair, September 22, 2009
The eighth annual Foothill Cities College Fair and Sallie Mae Fund sponsored Financial Aid workshops will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Duarte High School Campus, 1565 E. Central Ave. Admission is free.
Students and their parents can compare the programs and opportunities offered by more than 30 colleges and universities from throughout California and the United States. Some of the colleges will offer on-site registration opportunities. Among the many learning institutions already confirmed will be local community colleges, private and state universities, and career colleges, including: University of California –Los Angeles, La Sierra University, Saint Mary’s College, National University, Azusa Pacific University, University of La Verne, Citrus College, University of Arizona, Grand Canyon University and many more to come.
Bi-lingual Financial aid workshops for parents and student’s will be presented by the Sallie Mae Fund in the Duarte High School Library at 5:30 pm and repeated again at 6:45 pm. Participants can learn about saving for college, admission, the financial aid process, scholarships, etc. A $500 scholarship drawing for juniors and seniors in attendance will also be offered. The Foothill Cities College Fair is presented by the Duarte Unified School District, the City of Duarte, Duarte’s Promise; The Alliance for Youth, Sallie Mae Funding Corporation in collaboration with other foothill cities school districts.
As a follow-up to this year’s college fair, Duarte’s Promise will host its fifth annual College Preparation Seminar, an evening of education, information and motivation, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm on October 7th. The program will be held at the Duarte High School Cafeteria, 1500 E. Central Ave. Duarte CA 91010.
Students from throughout the San Gabriel Valley and their parents are invited to attend the event to learn about the process, opportunities and realities of preparing for college from a host of experts including college administrators, career planners, coaches, and financial aid advisors.
Topics will include financial aid, scholarship opportunities, financial planning, the recruiting process and how to prepare for it, the role of community colleges, state vs. private schools, tips on how to write a college resume, the admissions process, and how to find housing. The panel will also discuss how to take advantage of the resources of the campus environment, balancing academics, sports and employment, selecting and changing a major. Students will also have an opportunity to talk with career planners and NCAA regulations experts.
