Duarte Accepting Applications to Fill City Commissions
There are many opportunities available for members of the community to become involved in helping to make Duarte a great place to live, work and do business. One way is to serve on a City Commission in an advisory capacity to the City Council. The City of Duarte is currently accepting applications to fill 18 positions on its six commissions. The expiration of terms for current commissioners is Dec. 31.
Duarte citizens interested in serving on a commission will have until Nov. 30 to apply. Applications must be received by the City Manager’s at Duarte City Hall, 1600 Huntington Dr. by 6 p.m. Application forms will be available at City Hall, the Duarte Teen Center or on the City’s websites: www.accessduarte.com or www.duarteyouth.org. City Council members will interview applicants beginning at 4 p.m. on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. Appointments will be announced at the City Council meeting on Dec. 8, and the new commissioners will begin their terms of office on Jan. 1, 2010.
Six commissions offer interested citizens and community members a variety of opportunities to serve their community.
- The Planning Commission holds public hearings on land use matters such as general plan and zoning Code amendments, specific plans, rezoning, land use permits, and variances.
- Public Safety Commission formulates recommendations pertaining to law enforcement, crime prevention and control, code enforcement, animal control, and emergency preparedness.
- The Parks and Recreation Commission members act in all matters pertaining to parks, public recreation and to cooperate with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of sound park and recreation planning and programming.
- Economic Development Commission helps to formulate and implement economic development programs aimed at attracting new business, retaining and expanding existing businesses, and stimulating new growth within the City. The Commission also advises the City Council on marketing of the City including City assets and facilities, to enhance the visibility of the City.
- Traffic Safety Commission acts on matters pertaining to traffic laws, parking regulations, speed regulations, stop signs, traffic control signals, traffic calming measures, pavement markings, and other traffic safety and engineering issues.
- Public Services Commission acts on matters affecting telecommunications, cable and satellite communications, public access television, audio and video services, broadband and Internet services and issues. The commission also advises on refuse and trash collection, recycling, transit, environmental quality, public utility services within the City, green technologies and advancing the ‘greening of Duarte’.
