Duarte’s Promise to Honor Cesar Chavez’s Birthday With 6th Annual Community Volunteer Project; Congressmember Judy Chu to Speak
A major theme in the life of the late labor organizer Cesar Chavez was to urge people to join hands and work together for positive change. For the sixth year, to commemorate Chavez’s birthday, Westminster Gardens, Duarte teens, City of Duarte staff’s and others including Congressmember Judy Chu, Mayor Margaret Finlay will honor Chavez’s legacy by putting their hands to work and helping to improve an area of the city.
The 6th Annual Cesar Chavez volunteer Project, sponsored by Duarte’s Promise: The Alliance for Youth, the City of Duarte and Westminister Gardens will kickoff at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Westminster Gardens located at 1420 Santo Domingo in Duarte. The special program featuring Congressmember Judy Chu, live mariachi music and Cookie Oseguera, a Duarte School District employee who played an active part in Chavez’s labor movement and knew the labor leader personally will be followed by a 90-minute volunteer project. A continental breakfast, lunch and bottled water donated by Cal-American Water Co. and Westminister Gardens will keep volunteers well fed and refreshed as they complete a variety of beautification projects on the campus.
The annual Cesar Chavez Volunteer Event is one of a number of volunteer projects, programs and events sponsored by Duarte’s Promise – the Alliance for Youth. In 2000, Duarte was officially named an America’s Promise “Community of Promise.” during non-school hours, a healthy start and future, marketable skills through effective education, and opportunities for youth to give back through community service.
