Duarte to Honor Veterans in Ceremony At Thorsen Park Nov. 11

DUARTE, CA., October 26, 2010 - Veterans, families of those currently serving, and the general public are invited to attend a special Veterans Day ceremony sponsored by the City of Duarte and Duarte’s Promise;
the Alliance for Youth in collaboration with the American Legion Post 44 located in Monrovia. The event will take place at Thorsen Park, Thursday, Nov. 11 at 9 a.m. The City of Duarte annually ensures that veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and those currently serving the United States are personally honored and remembered every Veterans Day. Thorsen Park is located at 2800 Huntington Dr. at Encanto Parkway. Seats will be available at the ceremony with refreshments compliments of Starbucks Coffee, Homemade Donuts, Le Donuts, A&P Donuts, and Poppy’s Bakery. Cal American Water has also donated drought Tolerant plants in advance of the ceremony to beautify the park. State Assemblymember Anthony Portantino will also be on hand to honor local veterans.
The event will feature two guest Veteran speakers; one from WWII and one from the Iraq conflict. Lyle Umenhoffer, a San Gabriel Resident, will recall his personal experience as one of the few survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis, on one of the most tragic incidents of W.W.II. Staff Sergeant Hugo Caballero was raised in Chino Hills and is a four time combat veteran who fought in the Iraq war. Hugo served as both a interface control technician and a surveillance technician.
