Mary Barrow Honored as Woman of Distinction

Lisa Magno Named Business Woman of Achievement


DUARTE, CA, April 27, 2011 –Two well respected Duarte businesswomen have been bestowed high honors for their service to the community. 

Mary Barrow of Barrow/Hoffman Public Relations was named a Woman of Distinction for outstanding contributions to her community by Congresswoman Judy Chu in a ceremony at the Grace T. Black Auditorium in El Monte on April 3. Barrow was one of 13 women in the Congresswoman’s 32nd Congressional District to be recognized at the 2nd annual Women of Distinction Awards.

 

Lisa Magno, owner of Joe’s Place, a popular Duarte restaurant which doubles as a nerve center of all manner of community philanthropic activity, was honored as the 2011 Business Woman of Achievement by State Senator Ed Hernandez of the 24th Senate District. Magno was one of nine women to be recognized in their respective fields for their contributions to community betterment. The Women of Achievement Award was presented in celebration of Women’s History Month and the Centennial Anniversary of women winning the right to vote in California.

 

Magno is often at the forefront, leading and supporting many charitable events including serving as chairperson for Duarte’s 2010 and 2011 American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She has served as chair of Duarte’s annual Route 66 Parade for the past several years, and has provided help and leadership in support of the Man-E-Moreno Foundation, an organization dedicated to healing the lives of victims of violent crimes.

 

Utilizing her professional expertise as a publicist, Barrow has regularly sought out opportunities to improve and promote her hometown of Duarte and community non-profit organizations, including The Friends of the Duarte Library. She spearheaded the annual Duarte Festival of Authors, a major cultural event entering its 9th year, which promotes reading and literature, and brings more than 50 authors to town for a day of talks, panels and book signings. She was a founding director of Duarte Public Access Television (DCTV), and she continues to serve on the board. She was one of the original organizers of Duarte’s annual Salute to Route 66 Parade which she continues to support as a volunteer publicist and celebrity/grand marshal coordinator.

 

“Her work has helped to uplift the entire community as well as improve the lives of her clients. Mary has not only become a model citizen but also a Duarte legend,” said Congresswoman Chu.

 

Mary Barrow and Lisa Magno were recognized for their achievements by the Duarte City Council, who formally congratulated the women on their awards at recent Duarte City Council meetings.
