Duarte Hosts 2nd Annual Relay For Life June 25th and 26th

DUARTE, CA, June 21, 2011 - The City of Duarte will be hosting its second Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society on June 25th and June 26th from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. (24 hours representing the reality that cancer never sleeps) on the campus of Duarte High School, 1565 Central Ave.

Through involvement, participants honor cancer survivors and pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, while striving to raise $50,000 to help fight cancer in the community. Mayor Tzeitel Paras Caracci will kick-off the event at 9:00 am on the 25th with Mayor Pro-Tem Lois Gaston closing the festive occasion at the same time on the 26th.

Fighting cancer is a team effort! This year’s theme “Feeling Groovy” features over 25 teams who will camp out on the track of Duarte High and maintain a 24-hour community presence.  The event features food, games, tributes and fellowship with every penny earned going towards cancer research. The City of Duarte itself is sponsoring a youth team consisting of representatives from Duarte’s Promise; The Alliance for Youth, CHYLL and DART who have been gathering donations by selling “Feet” and Luminaries, which represent the people who have been diagnosed, died, or have beaten cancer.

The Relay for Life began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, the Relay has grown from a single man’s passion into the world’s largest movement to end cancer.  Duarte’s first event, hosted at the City of Hope in May of 2010 raised approximately $45,000.
