Teen Movie Night set for September 9th

 

DUARTE, CA, September 1, 2011 – The Duarte Mayor’s Youth Council will launch the first in a series of Teen Movie Night events from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Duarte Park on Friday, Sept 9th at Duarte Park is located at 1344 Bloomdale St., adjacent to the Duarte Teen Center.

 

Created for teens by teens, “The Back to School Blast Off” event will feature the hit movie “Take the Lead,” free hot dogs, ribs, and hot links provided by local non-profit Marvell West.  Leading off activities will be a “Dance Battle Contest” Contestants will have the opportunity to showcase their hottest dance moves and win prizes.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.

 

The event, co-sponsored by Duarte Parks and Recreation, the Public Safety Department and Duarte’s Promise; the Alliance for Youth, is open to teens in middle school and high school with School I.D.   Local youth clubs will also be on hand to sell club apparel and snacks. After dinner, teens can relax with friends while watching the movie and snacking on complimentary popcorn and shaved ice.

 

The Duarte Mayor’s Youth Council is comprised of a group of teens grades 8 through 12, who are appointed to a one-year term by the Duarte City Council.  The group meets on the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Duarte Teen Center. The Youth Council voices the opinions of local teens regarding issues that impact the youth of Duarte. Members learn from and contribute to the community by assisting in volunteer projects, networking and communicating with city officials and community organizations.
