Five Outstanding Community Volunteers

Honored at Duarte Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast


DUARTE, CA, November 23, 2011 – Five outstanding Duarte citizens were recognized for their community service at the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast and Duarte Chamber of Commerce Community Service Recognition Awards on Nov. 23. More than 125 civic and business leaders attended the event held at City of Hope’s Cooper Auditorium, presided over by Duarte’s newly elected mayor, John Fasana

and Duarte Chamber Chairman of the Board, Dr. Maggie Pezeshkian.

 

Duarte business owner, Leo Cabrera of Cabrera’s Mexican Cuisine was honored with the Outstanding Business Person Award for his support and sponsorship of many events and organizations in the community including fundraisers for the Route 66 Parade and Friends of the Duarte Library.

 

Resident Brenda Vanderloo, a leading participant in the citizen mobilization against the City of Azusa and Vulcan Materials Company plan to expand mining on Van Tassel Ridge above Fish Canyon and Valley View School, was honored with the Outstanding Civic Service Award for her activism.  Adina Mesa was honored with the Outstanding Service to Senior Citizens/Disabled Award for her longtime volunteer service to the Duarte Senior Center.

Teens Renee Estephan and Ricardo Resendez, seniors at Duarte High School were each recognized for their volunteerism with the Outstanding Youth Award. Estephan is the current president of the Duarte High Key Club. She also volunteers at City of Hope, serves on the Mayor’s Youth Council, served on the Teen Nutritional Council, and helped host the first annual Duarte Youth Summit. Resendez, who holds a 3.73 GPA, has been a volunteer for the Youth Breakfast. He also belongs to Happy Feet and the Fashion Club, two on campus clubs known for service.

 

The Mayor’s 26th annual Prayer Breakfast and 24th annual Community Service Recognition Awards were sponsored by the City of Duarte, Duarte Chamber of Commerce, Duarte Kiwanis Club and Key Club, Duarte Church and Clergy Association, Duarte Woman’s Club, City of Hope, Burrtec Waste Industries, The Gas Company, Cabrera’s Mexican Restaurant, and Duarte’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth.
