Duarte’s Promise to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

DUARTE, CA, January 10, 2012 – The Duarte community will pay tribute to the life and legacy of the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a program to be presented on Thursday, Jan. 12 at the Duarte Performing Arts Center, 1401 Highland Ave.
Duarte youth, members of the City Council and School Board, City, school district and city staff, along with other residents will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact of King’s life during the special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event sponsored by Duarte’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth
To be presented at three assemblies at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., the program will feature guest speaker Pastor William Kelly of Abundant Living Church, performances by gospel singer Eddie Howard and local rap artist Billy Dee, and an oratory performance by Myiia White, 2011 ACTSO local oratory gold medalist. The Duarte Teen Center Drama club will also perform, along with the winners of the 3rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest sponsored by the Duarte Teen Center. Concluding remarks will be provided by Joe Brown, Pasadena Branch NAACP President.
