Highland Ave Pavement Project Utilizes Recycled Tires

Duarte, CA, February 29, 2012 - The City of Duarte will be rehabilitating a section of Highland Ave from Central Ave. to Royal Oaks Drive utilizing an asphalt rubber concrete product composed of recycled tires thanks in part to a grant from CalRecyle.

Work includes the removal of 1¾” of existing pavement and replacing the removed section with 2” of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix.  Additionally, manholes will be re-adjusted, existing striping and markings replaced, and new traffic detection loops installed.  The pavement work consisting of grinding and overlaying will be performed during the Duarte Unified School District's  Spring Break April 2 through the 6th to minimize traffic impacts.

It is estimated that approximately $15,000 will be returned to the City via the Pavement Grant for the recycling of nearly 5,000 used rubber tires on this project.  The balance of the project costs will be funded from Los Angeles County Proposition C Sales Tax funds. Further, this project is eligible for reimbursement of the cost difference between conventional asphalt and asphalt rubber concrete through the recently awarded CalRecycle Pavement Grant to the City of Duarte.  For additional information on this project, contact the City of Duarte at (626) 357-7931.
