DUARTE TO DEDICATE GOLD LINE STATION AUGUST 15th

 

Community members are invited to the long awaited celebration and join with the City of Duarte, local elected officials, the Gold Line Construction Authority and Metro to dedicate the Duarte/City of Hope Gold Line Station on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 10 a.m. The exciting program will kick off with a  dedication followed by kid friendly activities and a reception.  Attendees will also be able to visit the information tables from the City, City of Hope and Metro.

DUARTE LAUNCHES THREE NEW SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN JULY


DUARTE, CA, July 28, 2015 – Over 2.1 billion people worldwide have social media accounts with close to 1.7 billion actively engaged. The City of Duarte is tapping into this dynamic world by launching three official City social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn in late July. The City has been active Twitter since 2010 and currently has over 1620 followers.

DUARTE RESIDENTS TO COOL OFF AT DIVE-IN MOVIE, AUGUST 7th

 

DUARTE, CA, July 27, 2015 – If the weather is too hot and reruns have you bored out of your mind, the City of Duarte has the perfect solution. Duarte will be holding its Family Dive-in Movie and BBQ dinner on August 7th 2015.  The festivities will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Duarte Fitness Center’s pool. BBQ dinner will be served by Marvell West and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie will play thereafter.

THE HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN DUARTE AND MONROVIA FEATURED AT HISTORICAL MUSEUM

 

 

Pasadena City College Associate Professor Susie Ling has compiled an in-depth history of African Americans in Monrovia from the 1870s-1960s era complete with photos and dozens of oral histories. The story of the many African Americans who settled in this region at the behest of Lucky Baldwin is compelling and many of these families reside in the area today. These are the people Baldwin trusted to work with his horses.

Residents to Celebrate the City's 32nd Annual National NightOut Against Crime, Aug. 4


DUARTE, CA., July 7, 2015 —Ribs, hot dogs, popcorn and a free screening of the classic flick Jurassic Park may not appear like traditional crime fighting but that's exactly what Duarte residents will be doing when they gather at Encanto Park on August 4, 2015 to celebrate the City’s 32nd annual National Night Out Against Crime.

NEW DRIVE-THROUGH STARBUCKS TO DEBUT IN DUARTE


DUARTE, CA, June 18, 2015 – Duarte Coffee lovers have something to stir about. The City will soon have a new state of the art Starbucks drive-through on the northwest corner of Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street.  The 1,850 square foot location will fill a key corner location in our City and replace the existing Starbucks in the Huntington-Buena Vista Shopping Center.

DUARTE “RAISES THE BANNER” FOR SOUTH AFRICA DURING ITS SPECIAL OLYMPICS HOST TOWN “DUARTE DAY” EVENT ON JULY 22

 

DUARTE, CA, July, 2015 – South Africa and Duarte united in a fun filled day of cultural exchange where traditional dance, friendship and food were embraced as the City of Duarte Special Olympics Host Town Committee and the City of Hope hosted a daylong series of activities designed to give the delegation a “Day in the life of Duarte” experience.



The day began at the City of Hope with a welcome parade followed by a luncheon featuring an inspirational youth keynote speaker and six interactive, scientific activities. The delegation enjoyed the remainder of the day at the Duarte Teen Center for games, a traditional American BBQ, and "hip-hop" lessons provided by "Duarte Dance." The action-packed day ended at the Duarte Community Center, which had been transformed into an island paradise, DJ Dance Party where over 50 community members, including the Senior Center Line Dance team, both welcomed and celebrated them.

 


As a Host Town, the City welcomed the 2015 Special Olympics World Games South African delegation consisting of approximately 91 coaches and athletes on July 22nd. Azusa Pacific University provided housing for the entire delegation of athletes and coaches during the three-day Host Town visit from July 21-24, 2015. The City of Duarte, in partnership with the cities of Azusa and Glendora and Azusa Pacific University (APU), opened their doors as Host Towns for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles the remainder of the days.

 

The day of events could not have been possible without the support of a variety of key sponsors. Numerous volunteer contributors include but are not limited to: City of Duarte Senior Center, the Friends of the Duarte Library, Duarte Chamber of Commerce, Duarte Woman's Club, the Duarte Kiwanis Club, the Duarte Education Foundation, Duarte Emblem Club, Duarte Area Resource Team, City of Duarte Mayor's Youth Council, City of Duarte Senior Line Dance Team and the Duarte Dance Team.


Before the Special Olympics World Games begin on July 25, 2015, more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries were welcomed to Southern California through the Host Town program consisting of over one hundred communities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. In anticipation of "Duarte Day," the City hung a series of festive street banners displaying both the City and Special Olympics logos along Huntington Drive in front of the Duarte Civic Center.

Vector Control Urges Residents to Help Thwart Invasive Mosquitoes


San Gabriel Valley, CA-  For the fourth year in a row, two Los Angeles County vector control districts are tackling potentially dangerous, invasive mosquitoes and the public health agencies are asking residents for help.
