Duarte Hosts Pasadena NAACP’s Afro Academic,

Cultural, Technological & Scientific Olympics

 

DUARTE, CA, April 17, 2014 – High school students from Duarte, Pasadena, and other San Gabriel Valley cities will participate in the local competition of the NAACP's Afro Academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) on Saturday, April 26 at the Duarte Senior Center, 1610 Huntington Dr.  ACT-SO offers 25 categories of competition in the sciences, humanities, performing and visual arts, including biology, math, original essay, poetry, entrepreneurship, computer science, chemistry, physics, oratory, dance, dramatics, musical instrumental classic/contemporary, vocal, photography, painting and drawing.

DUARTE, CA, April 17, 2014 – Duarte Family Movie Night under the stars is making an encore with two free, fun movie night events scheduled this spring. Disney’s blockbuster animated feature Frozen is set for Friday, May 2 at Beardslee Park, 2000 Buena Vista St. On Friday, May 16th, families can enjoy another Disney feature, Monster’s University at Maxwell Elementary School, 733 Euclid Ave.

Mountain Ave. Street Closure to Start in Mid May

 

DUARTE, CA - Foothill Transit Constructors (FTC), the company building the Gold Line light rail project, will soon begin work to construct the railroad grade crossing improvements at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Duarte Road, which is located in both the Cities of Monrovia and Duarte. The Intersection will be totally reconstructed to improve visibility for the train and for vehicles traveling along Mountain Ave. This work requires phased full closures of Mountain Avenue north and south of the center of Duarte Road starting in mid-May 2014 and completing in early 2015, approximately eight months.

SCAQMD Monitoring Station Up and Running

DUARTE, CA, April 10, 2014 - An air quality monitoring station installed adjacent to Valley View School to keep tabs on any unhealthful PM10 particulate matter emanating from Vulcan Materials mining activity above Duarte is up and running. So is a dedicated web page on the City's website where Duarte residents can monitor the quality of air they are breathing via real time data of hourly and 24-hour averages of PM10.

Duarte Proclaims April DMV Donate

Life California Month

 

DUARTE, CA, April 10, 2014 -- A single individual's donation of the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and small intestine can save up to eight lives. Donation of tissue can save and heal the lives of up to 50 others; and a single blood donation can help three people in need. The City of Duarte has proclaimed April as DMV/Donate Life California month to encourage residents to sign-up to become organ and tissue donors.

Duarte Youth and Family Committee Sets Series of Community Meetings

 

DUARTE, CA, April 3, 2014 -- Duarte offers many programs and services to youth and families, and the City wants the community to learn about them. The Duarte Youth and Family Master Plan Committee will host the first in a series of community meetings at Royal Oaks Elementary School on April 9. Families will have an opportunity to talk with representatives of various organizations about their services, enjoy free refreshments, a raffle, and provide input on what improvements they would like to see in schools or city services.
