DUARTE CA, JULY 18, 2017- The City of Duarte continues its long tradition of creating empowering opportunities for at-risk youth through the launching of the Work Investment Network (WIN) summer internship program. WIN, a collaboration of the City of Duarte and Duarte Unified School District created a unique opportunity for 20 at-risk teens and young adults aged 16 – 24, to gain meaningful work experience at a variety of work sites throughout the community. Participants earn a $500 stipend for working a minimum of 15 hours per week during an 8-week period. Interns also participate in a weekly, 1-hour training workshop intended to enhance their work and life skills. Participating individuals where in need of credit recovery, under or unemployed, low income, and had a background of truancy.
To encourage local businesses to participate in WIN, they received 8 weeks of free services from a Duarte youth and had to complete minimal paperwork. Most importantly, businesses are using this empowering opportunity to mentor a local young person, provide a meaningful workforce experience and ideally, set that individual on a course for success.
