Residents to Celebrate the City's 33rd Annual National Night Out Against Crime, Aug. 1 @ Encanto Park

DUARTE, CA., July 24, 2017 —Ribs, chicken, hot dogs, popcorn and a free screening of the Lego Batman Movie may not appear like an effective way of fighting crime, but that's exactly what residents will be doing when they gather at Encanto Park to celebrate the City’s 33rd annual National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Non-profit Marvell West will serve chicken, hot dogs, ribs and hot links starting at 6:00 p.m. and the movie will start at sunset at Encanto Park located at 751 Encanto Parkway. SCE Federal Credit Union is sponsoring Duarte’s “Summer of Heroes” Costume Contest. They will award a total of $300 in prizes to the most creative superhero costume.  Sign-ups start at the event at 6:00 p.m. with the first-place winner receiving $150, second place, $100, and third place $50.  Over twenty vendors will also be on hand offering giveaways, free bike repair, kid helmets, kid prints, inflatable attractions, and much more.  Duarte deputies, firefighters, non-profit and other local organizations, as well as city officials will be present to serve food and sponsor multiple free raffles.

Neighborhood Watch area coordinators and block captains, with the support of Duarte Public Safety and Duarte Sheriffs, are inviting all Duarte residents to this free event.  "Neighborhood Watch is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear because it fights the isolation that crime both creates and feeds upon. It forges bonds among area residents, helps reduce burglaries and robberies, and improves relations between law enforcement and the communities they serve," said Duarte Public Safety Director, Brian Villalobos.

Hundreds of Duarte residents are expected to participate in the citywide "Going Away Party" for crime. Duarte will join citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities across the nation by participating in National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The crime, drug and violence prevention program is designed to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized against crime and fighting back.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a summer evening and mingle with neighbors, deputies, firefighters and local organizations over free dinner and a movie.
