LA County Public Works and the City of Duarte will host an open house at Maddock Debris Basin, Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors will learn about County flood protection operations and how debris basins function to save lives and protect property during storm events.
Debris basins provide a critical function by capturing the eroded sediment, boulders, broken tree limbs and vegetation that are carried through canyons and towards downstream communities by powerful stormwater flows. Public Works operates and maintains 172 debris basins countywide, as well as 14 major dams and close to 500 miles of open river channel.
Maddock Debris Basin is located in the City of Duarte, above the intersection of Sunnydale Drive and Westvale Road (2500 block of Sunnydale Road), adjacent to residential homes in the neighborhood of Maddock Canyon. A shuttle will be available for attendees who require assistance in traversing the uphill walk to the facility from Sunnydale Road.
