DUARTE, CA – With the planning for Duarte's annual Route 66 Parade and 81st Anniversary Picnic titled, “Livin’ the Good Life” well underway, both residents and business owners are encouraged to come out and enjoy the festivities on September 22nd starting at 10:00 am. This year's event features retired Los Angeles County Supervisor, Michael D. Antonovich as the parade’s Grand Marshal and both Duarte High School’s 2017-18 CIF Championship Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team and Erika Sanchez, National Golden Glove Champion as the Community Grand Marshals. High school bands from throughout Southern California will also perform and compete for trophies.
The Route 66 parade, co-sponsored by the City of Duarte, the Route 66 Parade Committee, and the Duarte Community Coordinating Council begins at the northeast corner of Huntington Dr. and Cotter St. and proceeds east for one mile ending at Mt. Olive Drive. It typically consists of about 80 entries including antique and classic cars, local businesses placed along Route 66, schools, churches, equestrians, hogs, and approximately 10 marching bands.
The public is asked to be aware of the following street closures happening on the day of the parade, September 22, 2018:
In addition, Las Lomas road will be closed at Royal Oaks Drive to Gardi Street from 9AM to 3PM for the City Picnic.
Following the Route 66 “Livin’ the Good Life” Parade, join us at Duarte’s 61stbirthday picnic celebration at Royal Oaks Park 2627 Royal Oaks Drive. The picnic will be held at 2627 Royal Oaks Drive from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Enjoy dozens of food and display booths, live music and entertainment on the main Celebration Stage, fun on the Children’s Stage and a vintage car show.
Live music and family entertainment on two stages featuring professional entertainment including Boombox Heroes performing 80’s, 90’s and top 40 funk! Additionally, local musical talent, Duarte Dance Team, parade marching band awards and much more will entertain and thrill you for hours of fun!
Family Activities and Attractions: Inflatable Slides & Children’s Stage
Kids, join the Duarte Parks and Recreation leaders for some fun, freegames and activities, including challenging playground games like mini soccer, table games, and ping-pong! Severalgiant inflatable slides and attractions will thrill and will be freefor children. (Children must be able to climb the slides without assistance.) A variety of professional and amateur children’s shows and much more will be part of a full day of children’s entertainment beginning at 11:30 a.m. The free Arts & Crafts area will be located right next to the Children’s Stage, and mini-games will round out a great day of fun. Don’t miss “Let’s Move Duarte!” with various health and nutrition providers who will be on site. The Duarte Nutrition Council will conduct activities and provide education on healthy living and exercising and there will be a fruit stand as well. Join us for informative nutrition information, fun fitness tests and contests and lots of family activities.
Delicious food, fun games, and helpful information will be provided at dozens of booths operated by local Duarte and regional non-profit groups! Mouth-watering foods featured in the past have included barbecued meats, tacos, tostadas, snow cones, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, healthy choices and much more will once again be sold. Fun and informative booth displays and activities will include local college and university information, drug awareness and prevention literature, and many booths will provide giveaways. The tree-shaded beer and wine garden will add to your adult fun and entertainment with a great view of the main stage!
There will be a vintage car show at the Royal Oaks Park Extension lawn area displaying dozens of beautiful classic cars plus an arts and crafts show, antique engine machinery display, and more to complete a perfect day of family fun. Bring your family and friends to Duarte’s biggest event!
