Chu and Portantino Honor Veterans at Annual
Duarte Veteran's Day Ceremony
Over 125 veterans, and families of those currently serving joined Congresssmember Judy Chu, Assemblymember Anthony Portantino, Mayor Margaret Finlay and members of the Duarte City Council and staff on November 11th for a special Veterans Day ceremony sponsored by the City of Duarte and Duarte’s Promise; the Alliance for Youth at Thorsen Park.
The event featured two guest Veteran speakers. Lyle Umenhoffer, a WWII Veteran, recalled his personal experience as one of only 300 survivors from the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis off the Coast of the Philipines; one of the most tragic incidents recorded during the conflict. Technical Sergeant Hugo Caballero Chino Hills, a four time combat veteran serving in the Iraq war, spoke of the sacrifice freely given by Veterans and the his personal hope that veterans will be recognized for their efforts not on just Veteran's Day, but every day of the year. Hugo served as both a interface control technician and a surveillance technician during his tours. The City of Duarte annually ensures that veterans of the U.S. Armed Services and those currently serving the United States are personally honored and remembered every Veterans Day.
