Tzeitel Paras Caracci Elected Mayor of Duarte; Sam Kang Sworn in as Mayor Pro-Tem

Duarte residents set the course for the community’s new future by voting on November 6th to elect its first, seven-member, by District City Council.  Twelve candidates had vied for four District based seats with residents returning long-time incumbents Margaret Finlay and Tzeitel Paras Caracci to their new District seats in District Nos. 1, and 4.  The race also featured two new Districts, Nos. 6 and 7 that each had four candidates.   In District No. 6, Bryan Urias, a former Director from the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District was elected and in District No. 7, Jocelyn Nunez, a healthcare professional was the winner. No candidate filed against incumbent Samuel Kang in District No. 5.

One of the first acts of business by the group was a unanimous vote for Tzeitel Paras Caracci, Mayor and Sam Kang, Mayor Pro Tem for 2018-19.  Mayor Paras Caracci was first elected November 6, 2001, making her the first Duarte High School (DHS) alumni and the youngest woman elected to the Duarte City Council at the time. In the historic 2018 district-elections, Tzeitel Paras Caracci was elected to serve a 4-year term representing District 1. In August 2018, she opened “SEE JACK PLAY, an indoor play space for children and families.  Tzeitel is thankful for having the opportunity to make a difference each day on the behalf of the City she loves and has called home for over 34 years.

Kang, the new Mayor Pro-Tem, is a successful entrepreneur and graduate of UC Irvine with a BS in Chemistry and Azusa Pacific University with an MBA in Finance and a MS in Computer Science.  He has been on the Council since 2013 and has previously served as both Mayor and Pro Tem. Sam and his family have a vested interest in seeing the City of Duarte become one of the best Cities to raise a family and works hard to accomplish this by being proactive with City beautification, economic development, supporting existing businesses, developing quality, 21st century jobs, creating a “Smart City” initiative featuring free community Wi-Fi and working tirelessly to build a quality hotel in Duarte.
